USHIRIKI
2018-2021
Ushiriki Tanzania is a civil society coalition championing democracy and citizens’ rights in Tanzania through capacity building, research, advocacy, media engagement, and inclusive democratic governance. There are 23 member organizations from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Iringa, Pwani, and Zanzibar.
Among the issues supported by coalition members, the following are UT campaign priorities for post-civic election 2019:
- Assess women, youth, and persons with disabilities’ experiences, challenges, and lessons in their participation as candidates and voters in the recently conducted civic elections.
- Advocate for inclusive electoral policies for women, youth, and persons with disabilities based on civic election experiences.
The Ushiriki Tanzania Coalition’s campaign on the Tanzanian mainland focuses on promoting the inclusion of women, youth, and PWDs in election processes, including participation as voters and candidates.
Following the Tanzanian civic elections in 2019, Ushiriki Tanzania Coalition will conduct a post-civic election inclusion analysis to assess women, youth, and persons with disabilities’ experiences, challenges, and lessons learned in their participation in the recent civic elections as voters and/or candidates.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
To bring youth, women, and PWDs together to discuss and reflect on their inclusion in the recently conducted civic elections, including processes such as registration, participation as candidates, and voting. The targeted groups will share experiences, challenges, and lessons learned in the civic election and provide recommendations for better engagement in the 2020 general election.
To develop a joint analysis highlighting the experiences, challenges, and lessons learned by youth, women, and PWDs in the recently conducted civic election to inform improvements in inclusion policies for the 2020 general election. Increase public awareness of youth, women, and PWD participation in the recent civic election through Swahili and English prints.
To promote engagement among key government stakeholders in discussions about inclusion based on findings from the participation experiences of youth, women, and PWDs in the recently conducted civic election.
