INCREASED DEMOCRATIC AND INCLUSIVE ELECTION PROJECT IN TANZANIA 2020 (IDIEP)

TYC is implementing the IDIEP Project, focusing on promoting democratic practices and citizens’ participation, especially for women and youth, in peaceful national electoral and post-electoral processes in the Tanga region.

The project intends to promote accountable leadership and a peaceful environment in the post-electoral phase in Tanga by increasing citizens’ awareness of their civic rights in elections, strengthening community-based groups to drive citizen participation and transparency in the electoral process, and enhancing leadership capacities for elected leaders to enable them to successfully meet community needs.

The IDIEP Project is categorized into three phases of activities:

  • Pre-Election Phase
  • During Election Phase
  • Post-Election Phase

During the pre-election period, we managed to conduct several activities, including the main one, which was Voter Education. In this phase, TOTs (Trainers of Trainers) were identified and trained to conduct Civic Education in Tanga, Mwanza, and Arusha.

During the Election Phase, we managed to conduct election observation and successfully deployed 221 election observers in three regions.

The IDIEP Project targets several groups, including:

  • Constituency women’s and youth forums
  • Trained and new individual women and youth champions and their networks
  • New community gatekeepers
  • Aspiring women and youth candidates
  • Elected women and youth at ward and parliamentary levels
  • Non-successful candidates from the 2020 elections
  • Most popular political parties at regional and local offices
  • Journalists
  • National Electoral Commission
  • President’s Office
  • Regional and Local Government Authorities
  • Registrar of Political Parties
  • Community members (public), among others

This project will eventually achieve several outcomes, including:

  • Enhanced democratic practices and citizen participation, especially for women and youth, in peaceful national electoral and post-electoral processes in Tanga during 2020
  • Enhanced accountable leadership and a peaceful environment in Tanga
  • Strengthened democratic and inclusive electoral processes and accountable leadership in Tanzania during and after the 2020 national elections
