April – September 2017
Partner: National Democratic Institute (NDI), United States
Funded by: USAID
Tanzania Youth Coalition (TYC) implements a Youth Empowerment Project in two districts, Ubungo and Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam Region. The main objective of this project is to empower young people with information awareness and advocacy capacity to benefit from existing sub-national government-sponsored youth empowerment opportunities in Ubungo and Kigamboni districts. This project sensitizes and mobilizes unemployed youth, self-employed youth entrepreneurs (including mapped vendors “machingas” and those with established businesses), young people in self-help economic groups (income-generating groups); and district-based youth Saving and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs). On the agenda are capacity building and advocacy training for participants to enhance the capacity of young people and youth-focused organizations to engage with government and elected representatives in policy reform advocacy on matters affecting young people in the respective districts.
The implementation period of six months is between April 2017 and September 2017. This project is expected to reach over 100 youth and youth-focused organizations in Kigamboni and Ubungo districts of Dar es Salaam. At the end of the project, it is expected that the activities implemented would have enhanced awareness and advocacy capacities among a diverse set of young persons, including unemployed young graduates, self-employed youth, women, and youth-focused groups in the two targeted districts. Project sustainability is seen as the ability to establish and enhance networks among youth-focused groups in the districts, including SACCOs.
